HEARING VOICES “V’Hakol Nishma Bet Paro The news reached Pharaoh’s palace. Yosef’s brothers have come” (Gen.45.16)
The literal meaning of Hakol Nishma is ‘ the voice was heard’. In this text the word Kol – voice, is written without the vowel letter Vav; it is a voice lacking in volume.
The Zohar says, the quiet, weak and soft voice is the voice more readily heard.
He who prays to his creator should present his petitions silently, for he who raises his voice is not heard. The sound of the efficacious prayer is not loud but soft. (Sefer HaParshiot)
How is this explained? In prayer we have a dialogue which is bilateral and reciprocal. Man climbs the mountain towards G-d while he descends figuratively from the mountain top. In the mutuality of prayer, man addresses G-d and G-d hears in silence. (Soloveichik)
The greater the transcendence of man in prayer, the closer he reaches G-d.
The closer he is to G-d, the greater are the chances of his prayer being heard.
The closer he is to G-d, the quieter his utterances should be.
So, the soft voice of the petitioner is the voice more readily heard. (Nitzuzte Hayahalom)
